Henry Clark of Tarboro was a member of the North Carolina Senate in 1861. Upon the death of Governor Ellis, Clark became the governor of North Carolina during the first year of the Civil War. Clark attended a private school in Edgecombe County and graduated from UNC Chapel Hill in 1826. After retiring from politics in 1862, Clark returned home to Tarboro and spent his last years studying North Carolina history.
