General Henry Hugh Shelton, Former Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff under Presidents Clinton and Bush (1997-2001) and Congressional Gold Medal recipient, was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II. He is also the recipient of the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart and the Meritorious Service Metal. He was born in Tarboro, NC on January 2, 1942 and graduated from North Edgecombe High School in 1959. Mr. Shelton received his B.S. degree from NC State University in 1963 and his M.S. from Auburn University in 1973. He graduated from the National War College in 1983.
