Born in Ashland, Kentucky, Debbie Slone Kornegay graduated from Rocky Mount Senior High in 1967. Mrs. Kornegay was a social worker at Edgecombe-Nash Mental Health. Later, she was the long-time coordinator for the Rocky Mount Meals on Wheels program. She was active in The Church of the Good Shepherd, and served as secretary of the Christian Fellowship Homes for Men and Women Board. Debbie met a tragic death in 2007 while beginning another day for Meals on Wheels. After her death, Debbie’s Fund, a charitable organization which raises money to be contributed in her name to those organizations and causes which she loved in Rocky Mount and on Ocracoke Island, was formed. Recently, a memorial fountain was dedicated at the Imperial Centre for the Arts and Sciences honoring her life.
